AI Is Replacing Google for Local Search. Is Your Business Ready?
22 March 2026
More people are searching for local businesses by asking AI. Instead of typing "best dentist Nicosia" into Google and scanning ten blue links, they open ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity and type: "Who's the best dentist in Nicosia for a nervous patient?"
The AI gives a short list of names. If your business is on that list, you get the call. If it's not, you don't exist.
This shift is already happening in Cyprus. Here's what it means for your business and what you can do about it.
What changed
Traditional search still matters. Google isn't going anywhere. But the way people use it is changing fast.
Google itself now shows AI Overviews at the top of many search results. These are short, AI-generated summaries that answer the question directly, often without the user clicking through to any website at all.
On top of that, standalone AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are being used as alternatives to search. People ask them for recommendations, comparisons, and advice. The AI pulls from whatever information it can find online and gives a direct answer.
The result: fewer clicks, fewer visits, and fewer calls for businesses that aren't structured to be found this way.
Why most local businesses are invisible to AI
AI assistants don't browse the web the way humans do. They don't scroll through pages or look at photos. They read structured data, reviews, and clearly written content.
If your website is a handful of images with no real text, AI has nothing to work with. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, AI skips you. If there are no recent reviews mentioning what you actually do, AI doesn't know how to recommend you.
Most local businesses in Cyprus were built for the old way of searching. They look fine to a human visitor, but they're effectively invisible to an AI assistant.
What AI actually looks at
When someone asks an AI for a local recommendation, it pulls from a few key sources:
- Your Google Business Profile — categories, services, description, hours, photos, and most importantly, reviews. AI weighs review content heavily.
- Your website content — specifically, clearly written text that says what you do, where you do it, and who it's for. Not vague marketing copy. Specific, factual statements.
- Structured data — schema markup that tells machines exactly what your business is, where it's located, what services you offer, and your opening hours.
- Third-party mentions — directory listings, articles, and other sites that mention your business by name in the right context.
If these sources are incomplete, inconsistent, or missing, AI either ignores you or gets the facts wrong.
The Cyprus advantage
Here's the good news: almost nobody in Cyprus is optimising for this yet.
The local market is small. Most businesses have basic websites and sparse Google profiles. Very few have structured data. Almost none are actively managing what AI says about them.
That means the bar is low. A business that takes this seriously now, while competitors aren't paying attention, gets a significant head start. When AI adoption accelerates (and it will), the businesses already showing up in AI answers will be nearly impossible to displace.
What you can do today
You don't need to rebuild your entire online presence overnight. Start with three things:
1. Complete your Google Business Profile properly. Every field filled in. Services listed individually. A clear, factual description. Fresh photos. And actively ask customers for reviews that mention the specific service they used.
2. Add real text to your website. Every service you offer should have its own page with a clear explanation of what it is, who it's for, and where you provide it. AI can't read images or fancy animations. It reads words.
3. Add structured data. This is the technical part. Schema markup tells AI exactly what your business is. LocalBusiness schema, Service schema, FAQ schema. It's invisible to visitors but critical for machines.
What happens if you wait
AI search adoption is growing month over month. The businesses that show up in AI answers today are building a compounding advantage. They're getting recommended, getting reviews, getting mentioned, which makes AI recommend them even more.
The longer you wait, the harder it gets to break in. Your competitors don't need to be tech-savvy. They just need to get there first.
